Flying your pet with Lufthansa

Lufthansa carries pets as manifested cargo on many of its international routes. FlyMyPet books Lufthansa pet travel end to end — including the crate, documentation and customs clearance.

Lufthansa pet policy at a glance

In cabinYes — pet + soft carrier up to 8 kg
Checked baggageYes — IATA crate in the hold
CargoYes — Lufthansa Cargo animal lounge in Frankfurt
Snub-nosed breedsBanned from the hold; cabin only if under 8 kg

Cabin travel

Small dogs and cats up to 8 kg including a soft-sided carrier (max 55 × 40 × 23 cm) can fly in the cabin. Register at least 72 hours before departure — space per flight is limited.

Hold and cargo

Heavier pets travel in the climate-controlled hold in an IATA crate, or through Lufthansa Cargo, whose Frankfurt Animal Lounge is one of the largest animal facilities in aviation. A surcharge of about €150 applies to hold pets transferring through Frankfurt or Munich.

Fees

Cabin: roughly €60–€150 depending on route length. Hold: approximately $200–$600 by crate size and route, plus the hub transfer surcharge where applicable.

Breed restrictions

Since April 2026 Lufthansa bans all brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds — pugs, boxers, bulldogs, Persian cats and similar — from the hold entirely, due to respiratory risk at altitude. They may only fly in the cabin under the 8 kg limit.
